As part of your EarnLearn apprenticeship, you’ll need to book specialist courses through approved external training providers. These course costs are covered by EarnLearn after signing up to your apprenticeship. However, if you need to re-sit, refresh, or rebook due to non-completion, failure, or non-attendance, you’ll be required to pay the cost yourself.

Check your Welcome Email

Your Welcome Email is your starting point. It outlines exactly which Health & Safety courses you’re required to complete as part of your EarnLearn training pathway.

This email confirms:

  • The specific unit standards or courses you must attend
  • Timeframes for booking and completion
  • Any trade, site, or employer-specific requirements

Review this carefully before booking anything. Booking the wrong course or missing a required one can delay credit reporting and impact compliance.

If you can’t find the email or something doesn’t look right, contact EarnLearn before proceeding.

Find your training provider

Once you know what you need to complete, select a training provider from the approved list.

Each provider operates slightly differently, so it’s important to:

  • Check course dates, locations, and delivery format
  • Review entry requirements, including PPE, ID, or pre-reading
  • Confirm whether the course is face-to-face or blended

Choosing the right provider upfront reduces rescheduling, missed sessions, and unnecessary follow-up. If you’re unsure which provider is best for your location or availability, EarnLearn can help guide you.

Make sure you receive a booking confirmation and calendar the course immediately. Late bookings or missed cut-offs may mean waiting for the next intake.

Tell them you’re with EarnLearn

When booking, clearly state that you are an EarnLearn apprentice or trainee.

This step is critical because it ensures:

  • The provider applies the correct funding and billing
  • Your attendance is linked to your EarnLearn training record
  • Credits can be reported correctly to NZQA

If EarnLearn is not declared at the time of booking, you may be invoiced personally and reimbursement is not guaranteed. Your course costs are covered by EarnLearn after signing up to your apprenticeship.

First Aid Course

First Aid Course Overview

First Aid training builds the skills to respond safely and effectively in an emergency and is required for multiple EarnLearn pathways. We recommend completing First Aid before Height Safety & Confined Spaces. You will need to book a First Aid course with one of our approved providers below.

Required for: Plumbing, Gasfitting & Drainlaying + Electrical (Level 4 Apprenticeship only).

We recommend completing First Aid before Height Safety and Confined Space courses.

Electrical: 6401 & 6402 (Essential / Level 1 depending on provider).

Plumbing, Gasfitting & Drainlaying: 6400, 6401 & 6402 (Comprehensive / Level 2 depending on provider).

If your current First Aid certificate’s unit standards are listed on your NZQA Record of Learning, you do not need to repeat the course. If you hold 6401 and 6402 only and your programme also requires 6400, talk to the provider about how to bridge 6400.

Certificates are typically valid for 2 years. After 2 years you should attend a refresher, subject to your employer’s requirements. If your certificate is no longer current (older than 2 years), you’ll need to complete the full course again.

Please book within the first three months of your apprenticeship. We recommend completing First Aid before Height Safety and Confined Space training.

The course you will book depends on the programme you are doing:

  • Electrical: Essential First Aid (unit standards 6401 and 6402)
  • Plumbing, Drainlaying & Gasfitting: Comprehensive First Aid (unit standards 6400, 6401, and 6402)

 

Courses with New Zealand Red Cross must be booked online. A separate booking is required for each person attending.

Please note the following when booking:

  • To claim NZQA credits, you must complete all required trainee information on the registration page (name, date of birth, address, gender).
  • Follow the prompts to book your course online and select invoice as the payment method.
  • When attending the course, tick yes to claim NZQA credits on the enrolment form.
  • If you have already completed unit standards 6401 and 6402 and only require unit standard 6400, please email firstaid@redcross.org.nz to book.

 

All bookings must be made online by registering through the Red Cross First Aid website.

If you need to change or cancel your booking, or experience difficulties booking, please email firstaid@redcross.org.nz or call 0800 RED CROSS and ask for First Aid.

The course you will book depends on the programme you are doing:

  • Electrical: Workplace First Aid (unit standards 6401 and 6402)
  • Plumbing, Drainlaying & Gasfitting: Workplace First Aid Advanced (unit standards 6400, 6401, and 6402)

 

Training locations: South Auckland and North Auckland
Course duration:

  • Basic First Aid: 1 day in person
  • Advanced First Aid: 1 day in person plus up to 4 hours of online pre-learning

Height Safety

Height Safety Course Overview

Height Safety training builds practical skills to plan, set up, and work safely at height using the right controls and equipment. It is required for several EarnLearn pathways. You will need to book a Height Safety course with one of our approved providers below.

Required for: Plumbing, Gasfitting & Drainlaying programmes.


If you do not already hold Height Safety unit standards you must complete a course.

You’ll typically complete: 23229 (Use a safety harness system when working at height) and 15757 (Use, install, or disestablish temporary proprietary height safety systems).

If these standards are already on your NZQA Record of Learning, you are not required to repeat the training.


However, you may choose to refresh your knowledge — your employer decides whether a refresher is needed.
EarnLearn does not cover the cost of optional refreshers.

Identify height hazards and select appropriate controls.

Set up edge protection, anchors, temporary systems, and fall arrest gear.

Use harnesses and related equipment correctly and complete pre-use checks.

Plan rescue considerations and work within site procedures and legislation.

Book as early as practical in your apprenticeship so you can apply safe-work practices on site from the start.

This is a 2-day course and includes the unit standards required for your programme: 23229 and 15757.

When completing the booking form, enter your home address (or your employer’s address) so your Go Safe card can be posted to you after you complete training.

This is a 2-day course and includes the unit standards required for your programme: 23229 and 15757.

Confined Spaces

Confined Spaces Course Overview

Confined Spaces training builds the skills to enter and work safely in tanks, pits, and voids using the right controls, monitoring, communications, and emergency planning. It is required for selected EarnLearn pathways. You will need to book a Confined Spaces course with one of our approved providers below.

Required for: Plumbing, Gasfitting & Drainlaying programmes where work may involve tanks, manholes, pits, or other confined spaces identified by site risk assessments.

Choose a course that includes 18426 and 17599 (Confined Spaces knowledge, planning, and safe entry/working).

If these standards appear on your NZQA Record of Learning, you’re not required to repeat the course. Your employer/site may still require refreshers — follow workplace policy (optional refreshers are not covered by EarnLearn).

The course you need to book is: Working in a Confined Space
This course includes the unit standards required for your programme: 18426 and 17599.

Training locations: South Auckland, North Auckland, and Online
Course duration: 1 day (available in-person or online)

If you complete this course online, you will need to submit completed documentation for a confined space entry. This can be from a real entry you have participated in, or a scenario provided in the course. You will need to complete four specific documents, or you can submit equivalent workplace forms for assessment.
