Go to MyPortal →Industrial Measurement & Control (IMC) technicians keep critical industries operating safely, efficiently, and accurately. From manufacturing and energy to water and processing plants, IMC technicians are essential to keeping systems running and downtime low.
Whether you’re starting your career or developing skilled technicians in your business, EarnLearn provides a clear, supported pathway into Industrial Measurement & Control.
Industrial measurement and control is a crucial discipline ensuring accuracy and efficiency in industrial processes. It involves:
Measurement: Precisely capturing physical parameters like temperature, pressure, flow rate, and chemical composition, using sensors and transducers that convert physical quantities into electrical signals.
Control: Applying measured data to regulate and optimise processes, often via PLCs (programmable logic controllers) and SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) systems to adjust valves, pumps, and other actuators.
IMC supports:
Product quality: Consistency through precise monitoring and control.
Safety: Safe operating conditions via accurate monitoring and timely interventions.
Efficiency: Better resource use and less waste by maintaining optimal parameters.
Environmental compliance: Monitoring and control of emissions and pollutants.
These skilled professionals are the backbone of successful IMC systems. Typical responsibilities include:
Installation and commissioning: Setting up and calibrating sensors, controllers, and related equipment.
Maintenance and troubleshooting: Ensuring proper operation through regular maintenance and repair.
Data analysis and interpretation: Monitoring and analysing process data to identify trends and issues.
Reporting and documentation: Keeping accurate records of performance and activities.
Chemical & petrochemical: Monitoring and controlling processes in refineries and chemical plants.
Food & beverage: Ensuring food safety and product quality through temperature and pressure control.
Power generation: Maintaining safe, efficient operations of power plants.
Water & wastewater treatment: Monitoring and controlling water quality throughout treatment.
Pulp & paper: Optimising production through precise variable control.
Metal refining: Ensuring quality and safety in smelting and refining processes.
EarnLearn offers an industry-recognised practical qualification intended for people working in an IMC workplace and assessed entirely on the job. It typically takes 14 months to complete, producing qualified IMC technicians who can apply IMC knowledge and practical skills.
This qualification should be taken concurrently with, or after completing, the New Zealand Certificate in Industrial Measurement & Control (Practice) (Level 4) [2251]. It recognises the practical application of the knowledge and skills required to safely and competently install, commission, service, and maintain industrial measurement and control equipment and systems.
EarnLearn’s practical programme is assessed entirely on the job. All learners must have a workplace verifier to verify on-job assessments before they are sent to an EarnLearn assessor. The verifier must hold a relevant qualification or demonstrate equivalent skills and knowledge.
Note the following:
The unit standard assessments should be completed over a 12-month period and can be done in an order that suits the trainee’s work. Consider aligning the sequence with 2252 theory training.
Quick answers for learners and employers about the New Zealand Certificate in Industrial Measurement & Control (Practice) (Level 4) [2251]
The IMC (Practice) programme typically takes about 14 months to complete.
On-Job assessments are usually submitted over a 12-month period, with overall duration depending on workplace opportunities and assessment progress.
Training is workplace-based. Skills are developed on the job in real industrial environments, with assessment evidence gathered from day-to-day tasks and verified by a qualified workplace verifier, supported by EarnLearn assessors.
We assist with recruitment/onboarding through our EarnLearn TradeMatch, structured training plans, assessor support, and pastoral care.
Whether you’re a technician starting out or an employer building IMC capability, we’ll help you confirm the right training pathway and get workplace-based training underway.
